Utilization of Mobile Health (mHealth) to Improve Maternal and Child Health in Indonesia: A Systematic Literature Review
Keywords:
Abstract
The development of digital technology has created new opportunities to improve maternal and child health services in Indonesia. Various technologies such as mobile health (mHealth), telehealth, Android-based applications, WhatsApp, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based chatbots have begun to be utilized to support health education, pregnancy monitoring, postpartum care, breastfeeding practices, and stunting prevention. This study aimed to analyze the utilization of digital technology in improving maternal and child health in Indonesia through a systematic literature review. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach based on the PRISMA guidelines. Literature searches were conducted in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases, covering publications from 2020 to 2026. After the selection process, 12 primary articles that met the inclusion criteria were obtained and analyzed narratively. The review findings indicate that digital interventions can improve maternal health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, enhance antenatal and postnatal care services, support exclusive breastfeeding practices, and contribute to stunting prevention. WhatsApp emerged as the most widely used digital platform due to its accessibility and suitability for the characteristics of Indonesian society. The combination of digital interventions and direct assistance also demonstrated more optimal outcomes compared to single digital interventions. Digital technology has the potential to become an innovative and sustainable strategy for improving maternal and child health in Indonesia and supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
